What is the goal of vibration and shock tests?

The aim of a vibration and shock test is to ensure effective product manufacture and quality assurance. By testing the product's ability to withstand vibrations and shocks, weak points can be identified.

Complaints and returns can be avoided by detecting breakages, chafing and functional faults. Quality standards can be maintained or improved, which ultimately leads to cost savings. This ensures the flawless use of the product in the field and reduces failures of specimen. Vibration and shock tests also provide valuable knowledge about the mechanical properties of the manufactured product.

This enables the manufacturer to make design and material improvements which ensures that the product meets the standards of the market and thus ensures satisfied customers.

What happens during vibration and shock tests?

During a vibration and shock test, controlled vibrations with different frequencies and amplitudes are applied to the object to be tested, e.g. by vibration platforms, shock tables or electrodynamic shakers. This generates sinusoidal and random vibrations. The shock test involves short, impulse-like impacts on the product. This simulates loads that can occur during product use, such as the object falling, vibrations during transportation or sudden impacts.

The process of such a test begins with the precise fixation of the test sample on a vibrating table, whereby the future installation situation is simulated as accurately as possible. The test direction is defined to direct the vibrations to the relevant fixation points. Control sensors are placed at strategic positions to record the effects of the vibrations. If required, additional monitoring sensors are attached to take measurements during the test.

Various shock and vibration scenarios are performed during the test. The resonance dwell is analyzed to ensure that the product is not sensitive to certain frequencies. The correct installation position of the sample and the fixations are also checked.

In which areas are vibration and shock tests used?

Testing can be used in all areas where customers might expect sensitivity to shock or vibration loads: general engineering, industry, shipping, aerospace, railroad, electronics, defense, as well as medicine.

A frequent application is admission testing. Here, the customer develops a product and receives requirements from its own customers that the product must fulfill. Another area of application is defect analysis. Customers contact us with specific problems to identify weak points through measurements. From this, solutions can be developed.

Manufacturers with a high level of quality awareness also use vibration and shock tests to optimize their products. Even if no third-party requirements must be met, they choose to emphasize a certain quality through normative references for image reasons.
